Berlin Wall Project
Historic Berlin Wall Art Collection, Inc., has presented a project that has been in storage for nine years. They are creating a collection to be made from 1,000 large pieces of the Berlin Wall. There were 115 pieces completed in 1989 before the project changed hands. The remaining 879 pieces will average 250 lbs. each and can be shaped, carved, and textured before painting. They are looking for indivdual arists to purchase and design these slabs, as well as galleries with an interest in making and showing this art/history. The gallery would select 20 artists and HBWAC will ship 250-pound pieces to them shaped as directed. That gallery will also have the honor of choosing the first recipient of the Century Series, for which the HWBAC will cut 10, 350-pound pieces to be presented to one artist every ten years on the anniversary of the wall coming down. Belmont's New Tin-Based Pewter
Chemistry teacher Michael Cheney's search for a more castable metal with tin-like qualities led him to Belmont Metals, Inc., whose metallurgical experts suggested britannia, a tin-based pewter. Britannia is known for its ability to be hammered, cast, or spun into plates, candlestick holders, and other classic pieces. Cheney has made some sculptures using britannia and seashells.
