Friends of Kreg Scully
It is with great sadness that we report that Kreg Scully, the noted gem artist, has been diagnosed with advanced melanoma cancer. In addition to his own gem work, Scully has worked to further the gem arts through education and contributions of his own time and energy to many organizations, museums, and other venues that further the public's appreciation of gemstone art. He has been an invaluable member of the gemstone community and has touched all who know him with his passion and sincerity for his art.

Scully has been the sole financial support of his family; currently unable to work, he and his family could use any financial help to cover his extensive medical bills as well as simple living costs. A legal trust has been drawn up; donations will be placed in a bank account and funds will be made available to the family via the trustees. Contributions are made directly to the trustee in the form of a check written to: Kreg Scully and Family Cancer Trust and sent to either 2220 Koppers Building, Pittsburgh, PA 15219, or 4753 Ardmore Lane, Virginia Beach, VA 23456. The trust has been drawn up in accordance with all pertinent laws and has a Federal Tax ID number; all contributions are tax deductible. To receive a copy of the trust documents themselves, please send a SASE to Arthur Lee Anderson, P.O. Box 8525, Fredericksburg, VA 22401. We at Lapidary Journal send our sincere best wishes to Kreg and his family, and our thanks to our readers for their help.

Applying to Juried Shows
In a previous column (March, 1999), Beth Rosengard discussed the show jurying process, emphasizing the need for excellent slides. Ms. Rosengard has provided additional advice on choosing the four or five slides requested in the typical show application.

Two matters to consider are coherency and a fair representation of your work. Ask yourself: Do the slides complement each other and look good as a group? Are they stylistically compatible rather than appearing to be the output of several different artists?

Then consider whether your slides fairly represent your work. Do they exhibit both the high and low ends of your line, the one-of-a-kind and the production pieces, the geometric goldwork as well as the sculptural silver items? Will your work stand up to an on-site jury test? Some promoters diligently check the work you display against the slides you submitted, and too great a discrepancy can mean future rejections.

Depending on the number and variety of styles and materials you use, you may find these two considerations in some conflict with each other. If this is the case, slide selection will be more difficult. Unfortunately, there are no hard-and-fast rules to follow and you may have to walk a fine line. The best advice is to apply a critical eye as well as your own intuitive preferences and, if you're stuck, get feedback from a craftsperson whose judgment you trust.
