Alicia Shems
Left Side Meets Right Side, or How Your Garden Grows

Seed beads, charlottes, antique glass beads, fire polish beads, embellishment beads of various sizes, and silamide. During the creation of this necklace, the artist explored the connections between form and color, planning and intuition, tameness and wildness. The base of the necklace humors the left side of the brain, as it has structured patterns and is formed with regular alterations of right angle weave and netting. The embellishment on top of the necklace base humors the right side of the brain; Shems just 'let loose" and showed the creative process by using free-form peyote, three-dimensional right angle weave, and picots. Ultimately, the two creative processes informed and enlightened each other.
