1. Soldering Supplies
Flux, Hard and Medium Solder, Soldering Block, Solder Pick (optional). Soldering joins pieces of metal by using solder, a metal alloy that melts at a lower temperature than the pieces being joined. Hard solder melts at a higher temperature than medium and so is used first in projects that require more than one soldering operation: the hard solder won't melt when you solder with Medium the second time. Flux helps solder flow freely by keeping metal pieces clean. A block is a heat-resistant surface to hold pieces for soldering; a pick lets you nudge solder into place. 2 and 3. Pliers
Needle Nose, Round Nose, Flat Nose. Pliers bend metal into shape. Long, thin Needle Nose pliers let you handle small pieces and produce round bends; Round Nose pliers let you form round pieces; the Flat Nose produces flat or angular bends. 4. Burnisher
A burnisher can be used to push metal into place and to produce a polished finish. Grobet USA burnisher available from Naja Tool & Supply Co., 1-888-340-6252, www.najatools.com. Photo courtesy Stuller.

5. Tweezers.
For holding and manipulating small pieces of metal or stones. Photo courtesy Stuller.

6. Bezel Pusher or Small Hammer
(optional Bezel Mandrel in the shape of the stone). A special tool designed to let you get a smooth, tight fit between bezel wire and stone. (A bezel mandrel helps you bend the wire into the shape of the stone you want to set.) Photo courtesy Stuller.
7. File, Needle
Files smooth metal to the fineness of the teeth on its side; a needle-shaped file produces a needle-shaped impression in metal. Grobet USA needle file available from Naja Tool & Supply Co., 1-888-340-6252, www.najatools.com.
8. Wire: Stepped Bezel and Pattern
(no wider than 3mm for this project). Bezel wire is the stock used to create a band of metal, the bezel, that acts as a setting for a gemstone. Pattern wire is decorative and may be used for a bail, through which a cord or chain runs to hang a pendant. TSI, 1-206-282-3040, www.tsijeweltools.com/wireindex.html
9. Jeweler's Saw Frame and Saw Blades
These let you cut metal stock into desired shapes. Grobet USA saw frames and blades available from Naja Tool & Supply Co., 1-888-340-6252, www.najatools.com. Photo courtesy Stuller.

10. Sandpaper
Sandpaper abrades surfaces to the fineness of the grit of the paper. Stuller, 1-800-877-7777, www.stuller.com.

11. Flexible-Shaft Tool with Finishing Tips
(optional). Used for many purposes, this tool allows you to apply power to a variety of operations. Tool shown from Pfingst & Company, 1-908-561-6400, www.pfingst-jewelrycrafts.com; PRO-CRAFT Flex-Shaft available from Naja Tool & Supply Co., 1-888-340-6252, www.najatools.com.
