Here is a version of an unusual box catch that is quite easy to make. Most box catches have a trigger that pushes down on the catch, but this design eliminates that piece entirely. This would have seemed odd a few years ago, but now clasps like this are familiar from backpacks, bike helmets, and dozens of other applications. This clasp can be made in a wide range of sizes and proportions, so use these dimensions only as a point of reference.

Basic soldering and safety knowledge is helpful in completing this project.

• Length of tubing (sterling silver was used for this project) and 22-gauge sterling sheet
• Files
• Soldering equipment
• Small drill bit
• Rounded punch and hard surface such as an anvil
• Separating disk
• Flex-shaft
• Jeweler’s saw and #4/0 sawblades
